Welcome Back Scholars! I hope you had a great summer! Now you're ready to get back to school and have a great time learning new things and seeing old friends. The following are some suggestions to increase the likelihood of your success in my class this year.
Follow these suggestions and I can guarantee you’ll have a fun and exciting academic year!
Class Rules:
Course Description:
Biology is the study of life. It includes an introduction to the scientific method, cytology, genetics, botany, zoology, ecology, taxonomy, evolution, chemistry, and microbiology. Course work, lab work, and examinations will prepare students for future science courses. This course meets daily for 50 minutes. Students will receive 1 full credit toward graduation.
Course Requirements:
Grade Breakdown:
Your grade consists of a simple 25%/ 75% breakdown. The 25% is made up of classwork, labs, and quizzes that aren’t being used as assessments. The 75% is made up of Summatives, and other common assessments that are being used to check for acquired knowledge.
Finals will account for 10% of your semester grade while first quarter and second quarter’s average make up the other 90% for Biology. A final CANNOT be retaken.
Redo’s:
A “Redo” is a second chance for you to show your knowledge and understanding of a particular concept. Each student is allowed two “Redo’s” per semester. However, you must meet the following criteria in order to retake a Test/ Summative/ Assessment.
Criteria for “Redo”
Course Assignments:
Students will be exposed to various methods of learning: lectures, discussions, cooperative learning, videos, PowerPoint presentations, lab experiments, microscope work, group projects, and many hands-on opportunities will be provided.
Most of the work assigned can be completed in class. If it is not completed then it will be homework. When an assignment is due, it is due. In-class assignments/homework will account for about 25% of the student’s grade. Tests will account for the other 75%. In the days before a chapter test, we will complete a study guide or some type of review together in class. The majority of test questions stem from that study guide and class notes. Class notes and study guides are due the day of the test. Tests are slightly different from those given in other classes. The questions focus more on critical thinking, analysis, and understanding and less on memorization. This sometimes causes problems in the beginning!
10% of the semester grade will come from a comprehensive final given just before Christmas break (for 1st semester) and before the end of school (for 2nd semester). There will also be a study guide that goes with each final. A state end of course exam will be administered at the end of the school year. This will also be 10% of the 2nd semester grade.
Topics to be discussed 1st semester:
Biological Principles: themes, scientific method, and microscope
Cells: homeostasis, respiration, photosynthesis, mitosis, meiosis
Genetics: fundamentals, DNA, RNA, inheritance, expression
Chemistry & Biochemistry
Topics to be discusses 2nd semester:
Evolution: broad overview
Taxonomy: classification and the 6 kingdoms
Ecology: overview of all topics
These are some basic things that you can do to increase your chances for success in our classroom this year. If you have any questions please ask or leave me an email at [] or a voice mail at school.
I’m looking forward to a great school year!
